Calgary’s favourite downtown skating rink is now open & here’s how the city is celebrating

In search of magic this holiday season? Lace up a pair of skates and bundle up, because we can almost guarantee you’ll find it on the ice!

Surrounded by lights, buildings and busybodies, the Olympic Plaza Skating Rink has finally opened for the season, but there are a few things you should know before checking it out.

Built in 1988 for the Olympic Winter Games in Calgary, this inner-city destination has one of the few refrigerated outdoor ice surfaces in the entire city.

Here, visitors can take a lap or two between 10 am and 9 pm daily and this year, are even encouraged to attend their big launch party on December 2nd, 2023 (between 12 pm and 3 pm) to celebrate!

Not only will the rink be decked out in holiday decor, but there will also be music, free coffee and hot chocolate in case you get chilly.

Don’t have a pair of skates? Don’t worry! Not only is Olympic Plaza one of the most beautiful spots in the city in the wintertime, but it’s also one of the most convenient.

Not only is it close to restaurants, shops and work, but they’ve got their very own rental hut that offers everything from a toddler size 7 to a men’s size 16 as well as skating aids and helmets for children and adults.
