Toronto’s all-night art festival Nuit Blanche will be bigger than ever this fall

Toronto’s favourite midnight art showcase is finally returning this fall. Nuit Blanche has announced its plans for 2022 and for the first time ever, it will span across the whole city, from Etobicoke to Scarborough to North York.

Known as Toronto’s biggest celebration of contemporary art, Nuit Blanche is unlike any other event in the city, taking place from sunset on October 1 to sunrise on October 2.

This year’s event will include works by more than 150 local, national and international artists, marking the finale of ArtworxTO: Toronto’s Year of Public Art.

The curatorial theme of Nuit Blanche 2022 is called The Space Between Us, which invites artists to “build bridges between cultures, communities and the environment, transforming Toronto with stories about their connection to place,” says a press release from the City of Toronto.

The artwork presented at Nuit Blanche this year will highlight “shared experiences through the lens of Black, Indigenous and people of colour (BIPOC) communities globally while amplifying Toronto’s local voices internationally.”

Attendees will get to enjoy the most expansive Nuit Blanche in the event’s history this fall, with more than 50 commissioned art projects popping up in Toronto’s far eastern, western, and northern corners.

Plus, new exhibition areas will pop up in areas like Don Mills, East Danforth, Bloor-Yorkville, Sterling Road and Fort York.

Nuit Blanche will also showcase 10 augmented reality pieces as part of its AR Artworks series — the projects “weave a playful exchange between public art and discovery through unique AR experiences.”

Destinations throughout the city will be opening their exhibitions to the public during Nuit Blanche, including OCAD University, Harbourfront Centre, Museum Of Contemporary Art (MOCA) Toronto, The Bentway, Bata Shoe Museum, and countless others.

The event first debuted in 2006. It was held virtually in 2020, then cancelled altogether in 2021, so the city has been eagerly anticipating its in-person comeback. We’re officially counting down the days!
