Some Albertans could see northern lights AND the peak of the Lyrids meteor shower tonight

Happy Friday! We hope you’re well rested because it’s going to be a spectacular evening for all Albertan space lovers and jr. astronomers. Not only will the Lyrids meteor shower peak tonight, but some could be in for a dazzling Northern Lights display.

In hues of blues, greens and magic, those north of Edmonton could see an Aurora overhead, while those just outside of Calgary may be able to see lights on the horizon line.

According to Canada’s Aurora Forecast, the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and Astronomy North, those lucky enough to see clear skies and enough energy to keep their eyes open could be in for a show, Friday, April 21st, 2023.

A collision of gaseous particles and our atmosphere, the Aurora Borealis is often visible to those living in the Northern Hemisphere; however, every once in a while, when the sun is more active, the lights are pushed down and out, giving Canadians further away from the Earth’s poles a better seat for the natural phenomenon.

Of course, it is important to note that no matter where you are, you shouldn’t bet your life on seeing tonight’s Aurora, but don’t sleep on it!

Nothing is promised, but things are looking pretty good. Who knows you could be among the lucky ones!

Good luck, bring snacks, remember to tag us in your photos and enjoy!
