Eyes to the sky: The Northern Lights could dazzle some Albertans this week

Magic incoming space enthusiasts, romance-seekers and photographers! We hope you’re feeling well rested after the holiday break because this week some North American night owls could see the beautiful Northern Lights.

As predicted by the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Auroral activity will be higher than normal this week and might cause a stir on the horizon outside of Calgary and overhead in Edmonton, as well as cities in Northern Ottawa, Manitoba and Newfoundland on January 4th and 5th of 2023.

The stunning result of electrons and protons from the sun colliding with the nitrogen in Earth’s atmosphere, the Northern Lights are regularly visible from destinations like the Yukon, Norway and Greenland; however, depending on how active our neighbouring star has been, the bright neon streaks are pushed down and out giving other provinces a better seat for the show.

Of course, because nothing is promised and visibility could depend on the weather in your area, we wouldn’t recommend betting your life on anything – but stay enthusiastic!

Our advice? Don’t get your hopes up too high, pack some snacks and head north of what ever city you live in far away from light pollution. Who knows you could be among the lucky ones!

Good luck and remember to tag us in your photos and enjoy!
