One of Canada’s most picturesque and historic towns is along this Ontario lake

Wineries, lakefront views, historic buildings, need I say more? Niagara-on-the-Lake is described as one of the most picturesque and historic towns in Ontario making it the ultimate road trip destination any time of year.

Getting there

If you live in Toronto or the GTA, getting to Niagara-on-the-Lake is easy.

Driving will only take you around an hour and 45 minutes but there are also GO transit options to get there depending on which day of the week you want to visit.

Things to do in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario

They don’t call it picturesque and historic for no reason.

The town was established as a settlement for United Empire Loyalists in 1781 and was incorporated and became the first capital of Upper Canada in 1792 before being rebuilt after the War of 1812.

The Heritage District is one of the most popular spots in Niagara-on-the-Lake, made for strolling as it boasts boutique shops, cast-iron planters with flowers, and horse-drawn carriages transporting riders around the town.

Once you’ve taken in the sights (and shopping) of the Heritage District, it’s time to head to the countryside where the vineyards are.

Some of Canada’s best wineries are in Niagara-on-the-Lake so if you love a glass of vino, you won’t be disappointed.

Trius Winery, Jackson Triggs Winery, Château des Charmes, Reif Estate, Thirty Bench Wine Makers, Creekside Estate Winery and 13th Street Winery are just a few options.

End your day with a delicious meal. This mighty town is known for more than just wine, the restaurant scene has earned high praise over the years as well.

Wellington Court serves up elevated cuisine including seafood, short rib, veal and more while The Smokin’ Buddha has incredible “feel-good foods” from around the globe.
