A brand new beach has popped up on the Toronto Islands (VIDEO)

A new sandy destination has officially arrived on the Toronto Islands, and it’s so new that it doesn’t even have a name yet.

The new beach is located between Gibraltar Point and Hanlan’s Point, where fresh dunes of sand were recently placed in an effort to restore the area.

Urban geographer Daniel Rotsztain posted a video of the new beach on Twitter.

“[Toronto and Region Conservation Authority] has restored the south shoreline of the Toronto Island to 1980s levels after decades of erosion,” he wrote.

“It kind of feels like when you just moved into an apartment and there’s no furniture yet,” Rotsztain said in an interview with CBC’s Metro Morning. “It’s got that new beach smell.”

According to the TRCA, the goal of the project is to prevent erosion of the area and to provide “long-term protection of critical infrastructure and function of the Toronto Islands.”

The final phase of this project is to install a natural sand dune habitat, which began way back in June 2021 but was only planted this past spring.

The project site is closed to the public, but Gibraltar Point and Hanlan’s Point remain open.

A new public beach is also in the works for Toronto, in the Port Lands area. The destination is called Leslie Slip Lookout Park and it’ll transform an industrialized area into a gorgeous multi-use community space.

The park will be located on Martin Goodman Trail at the entrance to Tommy Thompson Park, according to CreateTO.

The public beach will be surrounded by forested dunes and will span 1.9 acres along the waterfront, with a viewing platform offering stunning views of the skyline and the Toronto Ship Channel.

Toronto may only feel tropical for a few months of the year, but we can’t get enough of our beaches.
