Calgary lands on a new list of Canada’s happiest cities

Calgary has landed among the happiest large cities in Canada, ranking in the top 10 nationwide, according to the 2026 Leger Happiness Index.

A total of 63,710 Canadians aged 18 and over were surveyed online between June 9 and 29, 2026. Data was collected through LEO, Leger’s proprietary panel, and weighted by gender, age and region to ensure representative samples of the population.

According to the 2026 Leger Happiness Index, Calgary ranked as the seventh-happiest city in Canada, with a happiness score of 68.6 out of 100.

That’s up from the city’s 2025 score of 67.4, and it seems Calgary isn’t the only Canadian city feeling a little happier this year.

Every Canadian city included in the index saw its happiness score increase from 2025, including our neighbours to the north. Edmonton ranked as the ninth-happiest city in Canada, with a score of 67.7.

Alberta as a whole ranked as the eighth-happiest province in Canada, with an index score of 68.5, a slight increase from its 2025 score of 68.

Montreal took the top spot among Canadian cities, with a 2026 happiness score of 72.7. Its home province of Quebec also came out on top, ranking as the happiest province in Canada.

According to the ranking, financial pressures, including the cost of living, housing, debt, income, and financial security, were the biggest source of pressure on Canadians’ happiness, with 57 per cent of respondents saying their finances are affecting their happiness.

Physical health, mental health, and uncertainty about the future were also among the top sources of pressure Canadians said were affecting their happiness.
