This enchanting river flows through Canada’s deepest canyons

Oh, Canada! From beaches and bustling cities to the Rocky Mountains and lush green forests, it really is the Great North.

Here, there is no shortage of incredible things to experience – like the Nahanni River, which flows through the country’s very own ‘Grand Canyon.’

Located in the Northwest Territories, this powerful stream is a bucket-list item offering some of the most incredible sights in the country.

“The Nahanni flows through a mountainous landscape, over Virginia Falls – nearly twice the height of Niagara Falls  – through Canada’s deepest river canyons,” Nahanni River Adventures writes.

In addition, those travelling by raft or canoe will also pass hot springs and “geological features so unique that the Nahanni River was declared the first World Heritage Site by the United Nations in 1978.”

Interested in checking it out?

You can canoe or raft down the Nahanni, though we’d recommend taking an expedition with a professional guide.

With 560 kilometres of rushing water, there is certainly a lot to see, do and learn, and you won’t want to miss a thing!

“Geographers describe the river as an antecedent river, meaning “one whose direction of flow was established before the mountains rose”,” the tour company continue to explain.

“Before the mountains in this area were created, the Nahanni wandered across a wide plain. When the rock uplifts occurred, the river maintained its course by cutting through the rock strata. This resulted in the formation of canyons believed to be 1.4 million years old.”

There’s truly no place like it, Canada, so add it to your list and start planning.

The Nahanni River is a gem.
