This “postcard-perfect” pond in Alberta is surrounded by colourful foliage

Wildrose Country is extra special in the fall and Mt. Lorette Ponds in Kananaskis, Alberta, is a “postcard-perfect” place to enjoy a beautiful day outdoors.

Tucked between Porcupine Creek and the Mount Allan Viewpoint, this scenic destination is a Rocky Mountain gem just a short walk from the day-use area off Kananaskis Trail, but there are a few things to note before hitting the hills!

What to expect

Described as “a pretty spot” for fishing, those who visit in the autumn will be surrounded by colourful foliage and if they’re lucky, wildlife.

With picnic tables and a paved walking loop, stroll, sit, or enjoy a packed lunch and the reflection on the water—but dress warm!

With temperatures dropping and an incredible view, it’s worth tossing on a few layers, but don’t fret if you get a chill.

How to get there

As mentioned, this particular site is just a hop, skip, and jump away from the parking lot, so you’ll be close to the comforts of your vehicle.

To get there, keep an eye out for the signs on Highway 40, then follow them to a large turnout.

Upon arrival, get out and walk 1 km from the west side of the road.

These ponds were once a loop of the Kananaskis River but were cut off from the rest of the river when a highway was built, now they’re easy to get to and make a beautiful place to stretch your legs or try for some trout.

You’re in for a treat, adventure-seekers!

Enjoy and happy exploring.
