Planning your next staycation? Why not start with the most popular getaway spots for 2022? VRBO has released a ranking of the top drive-to destinations across Canada, based on the popularity of vacation rentals in the area.
The list breaks down the top road trip spots from major cities all over the country. For Toronto, the picks definitely reflect the best attractions that Ontario has to offer, from wine country to cottage country to skiing and snowboarding destinations.
Based on VRBO vacation rental demand from January 1st to December 31st, 2021, the top destinations to drive to near Toronto are Picton in Prince Edward County, Collingwood, and Huntsville.

The report highlights some emerging destinations too, including Ontario’s Northumberland County where the Kawartha Lakes and Peterborough are located.
Another trend highlighted by VRBO is the popularity of long-term stays as working from home becomes more popular.
“In 2021, demand for stays of 3-4 weeks increased by over 40% year-over-year on Vrbo,” the report says.
‘People care less about travelling during school breaks and company-wide holidays and are open to getting away whenever they wanted that change of scenery. This trend is expected to continue in 2022.”
The pandemic has led to other unexpected trends in Canada. U-Haul recently released its Canada Migration Trends of the year and it lists the 25 cities that saw the biggest growth in new residents, based on the number of people who used their rentals to relocate.
According to the report, North Bay was ranked the number one growth city for the second year in a row with 40% year-over-year growth in DIY movers.
The next two cities on the list are Belleville and Greater Sudbury, both of which are nearly a 4-hour drive from Toronto.
When it comes to new places to live and explore in Ontario, it seems like people are expanding their horizons beyond the GTA.
