MoPOP’s newest exhibit gives you a behind the scenes look at the history of hip hop

There’s so much to see at MoPOP these days from Disney costumes to your favorite horror movie props. But it doesn’t stop there, now you have a brand new exhibit to check out detailing the history of one of music’s most language-conscious genres: hip-hop. Contact High: A Visual History of Hip-Hop is a can’t miss show full of images of your favorite hip hop stars.

The new exhibition looks at hip-hop throughout the United States from the 1970s to the present day. It looks at the stars themselves and the regional cultures that flourished in different parts of the US that influenced the genre. You’ll be able to see 170 iconic images and the contact sheets behind the creative process that went into the photos themselves.

Photographs aren’t the only thing you’ll see, you’ll also be able to check out artifacts from MoPOP’s permanent collection like “early rap battle fliers, Tupac Shakur manuscripts, Flavor magazines, and costumes from Sha-Rock, The Notorious B.I.G., and MF DOOM.” It’s pretty safe to say you’ll be able to see at least one photo or object from your favorite hip-hop artist.

So treat yourself this week or when you have the time and see the behind-the-scenes world of artists like Missy Elliott, Jay-Z, Queen Latifah, Tupac, and more.
