There’s a new floating spa in Tofino with seaweed hot tubs & a ‘sky hammock’

If you’re an avid cold plunger or fan of Nordic spas, get ready to add a truly remarkable experience to your bucket list in BC.

Just a short 15-minute boat ride from Tofino, Moon Jelly is a floating bathhouse that treats guests to an immersive six-hour spa experience, all the while surrounded by the breathtaking views of the Clayoquot Sound. Its main draw? The practice of seaweed bathing, or thalassotherapy.

Benefits of seaweed bathing

To start, guests soak in one of two saltwater and seaweed-filled hot tubs, inspired by the centuries-old Irish tradition of seaweed bathing.

The practice has numerous health benefits, as seaweed is rich in antioxidants and minerals, including zinc, potassium, magnesium, and iodine.

According to the bathhouse’s website, seaweed bathing can help with lowering body stress, increasing circulation, improving skin conditions, and regulating the nervous system.

Moon Jelly harvests its seaweed sustainably from the Naas Foods Kelp Farm near Tofino.

Next, guests can rinse off in a freshwater shower, or take a dip in the ocean to cool off. There is a covered gazebo lounge with comfortable day beds and towel service for lounging, as well as a ‘sky hammock’ over open water.

Guests also have access to a changing room and off-the-grid toilet, and a simple kitchen area with filtered drinking water, a power station, and a standup paddle board.

Located in the northernmost bay of Lemmens inlet, Moon Jelly floats within the first recognized Tribal Park in Canada. As such, the bathhouse is part of a stewardship program that uses 1% from local businesses to fund the Guardians that care for the ancestral gardens of the Tla-o-qui-aht Nation.

Getting there & pricing

Note that there is only one boat ride to and from Moon Jelly per day ($160 per person), which means the bathhouse puts extra care into preparing for each group’s exclusive enjoyment. So you’ll definitely want to rally a group of up to 10 people together to embark on this experience.

If you’d prefer to try the experience solo or as a couple, you can check out Moon Jelly on a Community Day, which occurs once a month and allows smaller groups of visitors to come together between 11 am and 5 pm.

The next Community Day will fall on May 20th.

The six-hour experience is priced at $1,696 for 6 to 10 people, $1,272 for 3 to 5 people, and $954 for two.

So there you have it, Vancouver! If you’re looking for an off-the-grid spa experience, it doesn’t get much better than this.
