Montreal was just named the 3rd best city in the world

Montreal is getting global recognition after being selected as one of the world’s best cities. This is first time the city has been awarded the recognition by Lonely Planet in 10 years.

In honour of its 50th anniversary, Lonely Planet has returned with the release of its beloved print edition, celebrating the world’s top 50 destinations in 2024 – including Montreal.

President and CEO of Tourisme Montréal Yves Lalumière stated “Being among the world’s ten best cities of this special 50th anniversary edition is a real crowning achievement for Montréal” a recognition which “speaks to the city’s truly distinctive appeal for visitors from around the world.”

Winning cities were chosen through a rigorous selection process surveying “international authors, staff writers, bloggers, employees”, as well as collaborators of the Lonely Planet editor. Submissions were then narrowed down by the publication’s Best in Travel team and finally submitted to a panel of travel specialists.

The panel rated cities on three criteria: “topicality, uniqueness and wow factor.”

Out of the 50 best cities to visit in 2024, these are the top 10 according to Lonely Planet:

  1. Nairobi, Kenya
  2. Paris, France
  3. Montreal, Canada
  4. Mostar, Bosnia
  5. Philadelphia, USA
  6. Manaus, Brazil
  7. Jakarta, Indonesia
  8. Prague, The Czech Republic
  9. Izmir, Turkey
  10. Kansas City, Missouri

Montreal took third place and was noted for its distinctive features like the quality of the city’s gastronomy (yes poutine), amazing green spaces and breathtaking views, the number festivals and cultural attractions, as well as the art scene and museum exhibitions.

Bon travail Montreal!
