There are mini hot springs bubbling on this Alberta mountain trail

Going on a 6 km out-and-back hike in Alberta’s Kananaskis wilderness is one of the best things you can do as a Calgary local — but one that rewards you with two all-natural, bubbling hot springs? That you can’t miss!
Located just an hour and 45 minutes west of Calgary in the rugged and scenic mountain landscape of Kananaskis, Mist Mountain Springs is a hike that’s both exciting and rewarding.
You’ll have to scramble up the rocky path, but your efforts will be rewarded with this amazing natural phenomenon.
Hot springs are more commonly encountered near oceans and low-elevation pools, but these ones keep watch over scenic mountains in a setting that looks like it came straight from Lord of the Rings.
In late October, there’s snow on the mountain trail, but it makes the plunge in the hot pool even more satisfying for weary hikers.

What to expect
It’s best to check the weather conditions and public safety notices before you head out of town to Kananaskis on this rewarding hike.
You’ll also need a Kananaskis conservation pass so you can park your vehicle at the Mt. Lipsett Trailhead area, just off of Highway 40.
To get there, you’ll want to head south out of the city, then turn west at the town of Longview to continue on Highway 541.
The AB-40 N highway is closed from December to June, so it’s best to visit in the next few weeks before the temperature drops and winds pick up in the mountains.
After parking your vehicle, you’ll need to locate the trailhead a ways from the road, which can be a little difficult to spot.
You’ll most likely encounter another hiker or two on this popular 6.5 km hike.
You can expect steep, rocky cliffs and picturesque views as you ascend the mountainside at 583 m of elevation.
Hikers mention that the trail up is a bit of a grind, with lots of scree and loose rock to contend with.
At the end of your hike, you’ll be rewarded with two natural hot springs bubbling up from the earth’s crust on the aptly named Mist Mountain.
You can strip down to the essentials and pose for a photo in the natural springs.
Of course, at other times of the year, you may have to wait your turn. But heading to the mountains armed with poles, ice cleats, and safety gear will reward you with head-turning, solitary views.
If you’re brave enough to venture through the snow and scree, you can enjoy bathing in the warm springs at the summit.
Note: Mount Lipsett and Mist Mountain Area are currently under a bear warning as of Oct. 6, 2025. When planning your trips, please be mindful of the dangers of hot springs and the hikes to get to them. Always let someone know if you’re planning a day hike or overnight stay outdoors. Familiarize yourself with this safety list prior to departure.
