We recently had a “today years old” moment. Until now, we believed that a facial is a great way to relax, pamper your skin and make it look bright for a day or two. Then, we tried the Custom Glow Facial at the Miraj Hammam Spa in the Shangri La. And learned first-hand, that the effects of a facial can last days, even weeks after the treatment is actually done. As it happened with us (two Curiocity-ites).
We were confident that the glow would start to dim down from the first face wash onwards. It’s been almost three weeks now and yet, our faces still look like glazed donuts… and pretty delicious ones at that (pardon the lack of modesty)! But it wasn’t just our skin that was happy, bright and hydrated. We too walked out feeling relaxed, rejuvenated and utterly impressed.
And we are here to present a tell-all about our experience—
First Impressions
When we stepped into the vibrant lobby of Shangri La, the live music had us grooving along. The friendly reception staff directed us to the 5th floor, where we found The Miraj Hammam Spa. The ambiance drastically changed as soon as the elevator doors opened. You are transported to a serene haven. The tranquil lighting, delightful aromas, peaceful ambiance, and welcoming staff create an atmosphere of pure relaxation.
Getting Ready
After a warm welcome, we were guided to the changing rooms. The spa provides you with lockers to store your belongings and supplies soft robes and cozy slippers. Surprisingly, they even have slippers in size 11, which can be a rare find in spas.
But don’t get too attached to the comfy robe because it’s coming right off when you enter your actual treatment room. The rooms are dimly lit with soft music playing in the background. You’ll almost instantly feel a wave of calm washing over you as you disrobe and tuck yourself under the blanket on your massage bed.
Skin Prep
Once we were comfortably settled in, our skilled estheticians, Diana and Holly, started with an evaluation of our skin instant. As was explained to us, skin instant is the precise condition of your skin at any given point. This evaluation helps the esthetician determine the best products and treatments for your skin.
The esthetician will also do an assessment of your skin type and skin concerns you might have. Of course, you have the option to provide input on your preferences. But we decided to trust the expertise of the professionals. Needless to say, we are delighted with the results.
The Miracle Treatment
This was, obviously, the main event of our spa experience and by far, the very best one at that. There were a total of 7 steps in our 90-min facial. The first was to balance the skin for treatment with a thorough cleanse. This includes a welcome massage of your face, hands and legs. Embarrassing confession: the massage led to an escaped snore while we were there. But our estheticians reassured us that guests sleeping while being massaged was pretty common.
The next step is the exfoliation with Biologique Recherche’s cornerstone product P50 on the face, neck and décolete. Next comes the L’eauxygenante spray which is an oxygenating mist that hydrates and refreshes the skin. Following this, a highly technical product combined with targeted techniques is applied to your skin for immediate, visible results. This is known as the booster which is selected based on your skin instant.
Then there is the Mask application. Their masks are concentrated in active ingredients to balance, hydrate and purify the skin. Our guess is, this Mask is the secret to our continued glow. The facial finishes off with a Cryo-Sticks – massage to soothe down any inflammation and redness.
Fab Finale
Time sure flies by when you’re truly enjoying something. And our 90-minute facial seems to have come to an end all too soon. After your facial/massage you have three options – soak in the hot tub, dip in the pool or chill at the lounge. We ended up choosing the lounge where we enjoyed a warm and delicious middle-eastern-style tea. Trust us, after the immense relaxation you feel during your session, the tea is needed to come back to reality.
The lounge also offers a variety of small bites but we found that the baklava paired really well with the tea.
