Scenic trails meander through a forest and marsh at this Metro Vancouver park

Coquitlam is home to an abundance of nature paths and beautiful parks that are often underrated when compared to urban parks in Vancouver, and according to Reddit, Minnekhada Regional Park is one of them.

Encompassing a forest, marsh, and rocky cliffs, this diverse park has a wealth of walking paths that are mostly flat, as well as a popular “moderate” hike up to High Knoll, where sweeping views await.

Originally opened in 1981, the park provides visitors with excellent wildlife viewing opportunities year-round. While no cycling is permitted on park trails (except for Oliver Road), this gives park-goers the chance to slow down and explore the area on foot.

For one, Lodge Trail is a 2-kilometre route from the Quarry Road Entrance, with plenty of wildlife to spot along the Lower Marsh. It also leads to a small picnic area.

From there, Fern Trail meanders over the surrounding hills (2.7 kilometres), with partial views of Pitt River and Addington Marsh from the Addington Lookout.

Note that Minnekhada Farm was added in 1995, but is now closed to the public. Dogs must be leashed at all times in this park.

Minnekhada Lodge is open for event booking on the first Sunday of the month and most other Sundays from February through December, from 1 to 4 p.m. You can reserve your spot online.

As with many parks in the area, be sure to keep your eyes out for local wildlife such as bears, cougars, and coyotes, making sure to keep a distance of 100 metres or more.

It might be time to step out of your routine for your next winter walk.
