Known consistently as one of the prettiest small towns in B.C., Mayne Island is a must-visit any time of year. But there’s nothing we crave more during the colder months than a taste of the island life.
A former stopping point during the 1850s Fraser Gold Rush, the island is a popular spot for hiking and kayaking, accessible by a scenic ferry ride from Vancouver or Victoria. Outdoor lovers frequent Mount Parke Regional Park for its moderate trails and panoramic views of the Gulf Islands, the Strait of Georgia, and the distant peaks of Vancouver Island.
The small community is also revered for its clear waters and diverse array of wildlife sightings, which range from orcas to soaring eagles. Bennett Bay is a true hotspot for whale sightings, so make sure you head here to try and catch a glimpse during their migratory season!
And if you’re more of a birdwatching enthusiast, check out the rocky beaches and bluffs at St. John Point Regional Park.
Not only is Mayne Island dotted with small islets and hidden coves on the shoreline, but there are plenty of artist studios to visit if you’re hoping to meet local artisans and makers during your visit. The island’s annual Reading Festival and Studio Tour are just a couple of beloved events that allow local artists to display their work.
Another highlight of the small town is its beautiful Japanese Garden, which honours the island’s Japanese Canadian community with well-maintained plants, a serene pond, and stone lanterns.
In terms of weather, the island is known for its mild winters and pleasant summers, which average around 20°C during the warmer months.
Winter temperatures on Mayne Island typically average at 5°C, which sounds like a pretty sweet deal to us.
Your next island stay is a quick ferry ride away!
How to get there: Take a ferry from Tsawwassen to Mayne Island Village Bay.
