This Ontario village is a popular destination for filming Christmas movies

Not too far away from the city of Ottawa is a small Ontario village that offers beautiful scenic backdrops and is a popular destination for holiday filming. The village of Manotick is next on our list and here’s what to know.

About a 40-minute drive south of Ottawa is Manotick. Described as a “country getaway”, the village is a photogenic community, filled with scenic backdrops, according to Ottawa Tourism.

It has quite the history too! Per its official website, the village dates back to the 1800s.

“Most historians believe the name ‘Manotick’ comes from an Indigenous word meaning “island in the river.” That refers to Long Island, which lies in the middle of today’s Manotick,” shares the site.

“By 1880, Manotick had a population of about 400, and boasted stores, a school, churches, blacksmith shops, and mail service. It grew slowly but steadily over the next century.”

Watson’s Mill on the Rideau River is one of those historic buildings and it is a sight to see. Make sure to check it out, especially if you’re looking to do some holiday shopping at its Christmas market.

The mill is also an attraction for filmmakers for Christmas movies.

According to Ottawa Tourism, a number of the village’s shops and restaurants appeared in a holiday movie called Candy Cane Christmas – Terra Plants and Flowers, Black Dog Bistro, and 692 Coffee and Bar.

“Even the local McDonough’s Your Independent Grocer had its moment in the spotlight,” shared the site. “Reindeer Games Homecoming included the Manotick Community Centre & Mike O’Neil Arena along with the Ottawa Fire Station 94.”

We wouldn’t blame you if you paid the village a visit during the holidays and had your main character moment!

Manotick is full of one-of-a-kind boutiques too, perfect for those unique Christmas presents so shopping in this village is a must. In need of a break? Ottawa Tourism recommends The Miller’s Oven. It is run by a volunteer group of seniors and is a beloved spot for baked goods, tea, and light lunches.
