One of the oldest known meteor showers will appear over Canada this spring & here’s when to see it

Leave the city lights behind and look up! The Lyrids Meteor Shower will soon rain over Canada and those lucky enough to see a clear sky will be in for a spectacular show.

One of the oldest known showers, those interested in the celestial display can expect an occasional bright flash called a ‘fireball’ and anywhere between 10 and 20 meteors an hour – though they can be unpredictable.

“The Lyrids are known for their fast and bright meteors,” explains NASA.

“Though not as fast or as plentiful as the famous Perseids in August, Lyrids can surprise watchers with as many as 100 meteors seen per hour.”

The event will run from April 15th to April 29th, 2024 and is expected to peak at 9:23 UTC on April 22nd.

As always, there are a few ways you can ensure the best possible view, the most important being the time and place.

NASA suggests that you avoid street and lights and that you come prepared with a sleeping bag, blanket, or lawn chair.

“Lie flat on your back with your feet facing east and look up, taking in as much of the sky as possible,” they write.

“After about 30 minutes in the dark, your eyes will adapt and you will begin to see meteors. Be patient – the show will last until dawn, so you have plenty of time to catch a glimpse.”
