A maple leaf-loving city called ‘Little Canada’ exists south of the border & here’s where

Those who live and leave the great north, often take a piece of it with them when they go – but it’s not every day that one of them successfully creates an entire city in honour of their time spent here.

Located in Minnesota less than a half hour from Minneapolis, you’ll find Little Canada – an American destination that might be awfully familiar to any hockey-loving, Tims-drinking, winter-braving traveller.

While originally the summer home of the Mdewakanton Dakota from Little Crow’s Village, the municipality as we know it was legally established in 1844 by Benjamin Gervais, a French-speaking Canadian from Winnipeg.

It’s said that the area reminded Gervais of home, which was comforting, considering he and several other Winnipeggers were forced to leave their previous dwelling due to the Red River flood of 1826.

Over the last 178 years, the residents have continued to celebrate the city’s Canadian influence, showcasing our red and white flag in their city council chambers, featuring the maple leaf in their logo, and even holding a festival every August aptly named ‘Canadian Days’ in conjunction with its sister city – Thunder Bay, Ontario.

From several parades to, food trucks and a fireworks show, these folks clearly know how to party – and while their population is quite small (just over 10,000 people) their love for the Canada-inspired city is mighty.

Would you visit Little Canada? Let us know – after all, there’s nothing more flattering than having an entire city named after you.
