Canada is one of the 30 countries in the world to recognize same-sex marriage, and the federal government has worked over the course of many years to expand its knowledge and inclusivity of the LGBTQ+ community. Modernizing sex and gender information practices, creating The Equal Rights Coalition, and ensuring refugee protections for LGTBQ+ individuals are just some of the concrete ways that Canada has shown its support. And while these are not ‘bandaid fixes’ or a blanket solution for all related issues, they definitely help with creating safe, LGBTQ+-friendly cities.

And thankfully, Moving Waldo has ranked the top 10 LGBTQ+-friendly cities in Canada in terms of quality of life. The evaluating criteria are based on information provided by Canada’s LGBT+ Chamber of Commerce (CGLCC), the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Gay Pride Calendar, and supporting info from Zumper and Numbeo.

The report looks at a city’s community support, affordability, safety, and what Moving Waldo calls “pride-readiness,” which includes pride festivals, gay bars and clubs, and LGBTQ+-friendly accommodations.
