Edmonton is building the largest rooftop solar array in Canada

There are some sunny times ahead for the city! Today, Edmonton announced it is building the largest rooftop solar array in Canada, and at one of the city’s most well-known buildings. What’s more, the project should be completed as early as November! Here’s what to know.

The roughly $5,000,000 project will see 5,754 panels installed across some 193,735.5 square feet of space. Quick guess as to which building can accommodate that? You’re right friend, it’s the Edmonton Expo Centre, and specifically above the Halls D through H.

According to a press release, the project will “generate at least 2.8 gigawatts of energy annually, equal to that of about 375 homes.” Based on these figures, the project will be able to yield between $290,000 to $460,000 in operational savings each year.

The enthusiasm doesn’t stop there, though. If approved, the city will move forward with Phase 2 of the project, which will cover Halls A through C as well. That should generate some 1.9 gigawatts of energy, at a cost of $3,400,000.
