Sunset in Vancouver is the perfect place to embrace the spirit of unity as one of the city’s most ethnically diverse neighbourhoods, and it will soon transform for B.C.’s largest Filipino cultural festival. This April, the second annual Lapu-Lapu Day Block Party will take over the heart of South Vancouver, kicking off Asian Heritage Month and festival season with a celebration to remember.

About Lapu-Lapu Day

For those who don’t know, Lapu-Lapu Day commemorates the first national hero of the Philippines, Lapu Lapu, an Indigenous Visayan Chieftain who stood against the oppression of Indigenous Filipinos by the Spanish and Portuguese colonizers.

Today, he remains a symbol of inspiration for Filipinos across the globe, reminding all of the unwavering resistance of the Philippines and the fight for its freedom.

2025 festival details

In Vancouver, the Lapu-Lapu Day Block Party celebrates this history with a full day of festivities, including live performances, delicious Filipino food, craft vendors, and basketball tournaments. In fact, last year’s inaugural festival marked the city’s largest basketball showdown ever – so we can only assume that this year will be bigger and better than ever!

While specific details have not yet been released regarding this year’s program or lineup of vendors, guests can expect a full day of live music and dance on the MYX Mainstage, for starters. Last year, performers on the roster included Filipino singer-songwriter Jeremy Passion and rapper Ruby Ibarra.

The Lapu-Lapu Day Block Party will take place from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, 2025, in the Sunset neighbourhood.

If you’ve always wanted to learn about Filipino culture and heritage, now’s your chance to rally together and engage with the community!

So mark your calendars, and stay tuned for more info as it comes.
