With sunnier days around the corner, now is as good a time as any to get excited for days on the lake. So if you want to take the scenic route without shelling out the dough, it’s worth checking out the Kootenay Lake Ferry – AKA, the longest free ferry ride in the world!

During the summer months (mid-June through Labour Day weekend), two ferries run per day, limiting wait times.

There are two vessels to choose from: The Osprey 2000, which has a larger capacity, and the smaller MV Balfour, which is added to the schedule during high traffic season.

The good news? Both ferries can accommodate RVs and vehicles of all sizes.

The ferry ride takes passengers between Kootenay Bay and Balfour, taking approximately 35 minutes in total, plus 10 to 15 minutes to accommodate boarding and departure.
