Looking to join a new gym and start fulfilling your New Year’s resolutions? A brand new fitness gym and wellness space is now open in Yaletown, and first-timers get to try it out for free.

Kommunity Fitness opened in Yaletown at the end of January, giving workout enthusiasts and newcomers alike a place to come together and work up a sweat.

About Kommunity

In an interview with Curiocity, co-founder Aaron Keay shares the vision behind Kommunity. “It’s all about teaching people in a group environment how to exercise properly, not get injured, and develop strong technique,” says Keay.

Think of the convenience and comfort of at-home workouts combined with the expertise of expert trainers – and the social element of working out with friends.

At the heart of Kommunity is inclusivity, with each program tailored to small groups of participants regardless of skill or fitness level.

The dimly-lit, mirrored room has 15 TV screens to provide each workout station with clear views of each exercise.

“Each TV creates its own station, and each station fits up to three people. So it’s really easy to work out with your friends,” says Keay. “With anything that you’re doing – you can look up at your screen at the pre-recorded instruction, and in the mirror at your technique.”

Workout content

So no matter if it’s your first workout or your hundredth, Kommunity makes it easy and fun to follow along and get your body moving without being intimidated.

“We shot the workout content from four different angles, so you’re seeing different planes from above, from the sides, and from below,” Keay explains. Accompanying each workout is a custom playlist created by local DJs in the Vancouver scene, as well as curated graphics and quotes between each station to help keep the motivation high.

“This briefly takes everyone’s mind out of the workout for a break before going into the next exercise,” says Keay.

Instead of working out themselves, “instructors are focused on helping you and getting to your station if you need assistance,” according to Keay. This makes asking clarifying questions or improving your form that much simpler.

In other words, your personal progress is a priority here!

The studio

The space itself welcomes guests with a social lounge, giving friends old and new the opportunity to connect pre or post-workout.

Ready to try a class out for yourself? This week marks “Bring a Loved One Week” until February 18th, so there’s never been a better time to treat yourself and your pals to some self-care.

Those interested can purchase a membership or class pack from the studio’s website to get started, scheduling their first class under the schedule tab.

Memberships can be purchased in 4, 8 or 12 classes per month bundles. Members can sign up with their friends, pick their workout station on their app, and enjoy a session together.

So there you have it, Vancouver. For all things fitness, wellness, and community, you know where to head!
