You don’t need to cross the Atlantic to experience a piece of Scotland! All you have to do is head to the historic Ontario town of Fergus to get in on all the fun. With its charming stone architecture, scenic bridges, and even a lucky “kissing stane,” Fergus offers a glimpse into its deep Scottish roots.
Nestled along the banks of the Grand River, Fergus is located about an hour and a half from Toronto. And it’s just minutes away from Ontario’s “most beautiful village,” Elora.
The town’s history dates back to the early 19th century, officially founded in 1833.
Take some time to explore its historic downtown core, filled with natural limestone buildings, parks and stunning public gardens.
According to its website, Fergus has strong Scottish roots, and they’ve made an effort to preserve its rich heritage to this day.
In fact, the town hosts an annual Scottish Festival and Highland Games every summer with renowned Celtic talent from around the world. If you missed this year’s event, don’t worry! You can do it all over again from Aug. 7 to 9, 2026, to experience this cultural moment.
In the meantime, you can browse specialty stores like the Fergus Scottish Corner Shop and the enchanting Bookery that feels like a trip back in time. If you’re looking for picture-perfect scenery, you’ll want to snap pictures at the Place Tower Street Bridge, Milligan Footbridge, Caldwell Bridge or Trestle Bridge.
And of course, no visit is complete without a stop at the Templin Gardens. Carved right into the banks of its gorge, this historic spot is just minutes away from its downtown core. It has a staircase that leads down to the river’s edge.
Last but not least, don’t forget to visit the Kissing Stane. Grab your partner and seal your trip with a kiss while seated on the stone – for good luck, of course.
“Visit the one place in Victorian time Fergus, where public displays of affection were tolerated,” shares its website.
“Next to the stane is now a locally forged iron sculpture where you can lock in your love with your own padlock.”
Make sure to also pay the scenic St. Andrew’s Mill a visit, check out the Grand River nearby, and explore the extensive surrounding trail network!
