Kincardine, Ontario, is the perfect place to surf this winter! Yes, you can still surf in the winter, in fact, it’s a popular activity in this Ontario town. Kincardine is nestled on the shores of Lake Huron, where the best waves come during the colder months.
The area has a couple of claims to fame including being known as the province’s “Scottish destination” as people come from far and wide to enjoy the “flavour of Scottish culture.”
Kincardine is a part of the beautiful Bruce County and sits along Lake Huron.
The town is around two hours north of London, Ontario, and if you’re driving from Toronto/the GTA it will take you three hours to get there.
So, why is winter surfing so popular in Kincardine? It has to do with Lake Huron being a freshwater lake.
According to the town of Kincardine, freshwater waves are “completely wind-driven,” meaning if there’s no wind, there are no waves. Kincardine experiences strong onshore winds during the colder months like spring and winter, making the conditions perfect for surfing.
“Surfing in the winter is not for everyone. It is, however, one of the most magical experiences you will ever encounter,” shares the town website.
If you’re worried about being too cold, you just need the right gear!
A proper wetsuit will keep you warm on the cold waters and the Local SurfShop, Surfsup Eco Shop, located in the town’s downtown area “has helpful and knowledgeable staff that can answer any questions or concerns you may have.”
Pretty cool, right? I sure think so, and if someone was willing to do it with me, I would definitely hit the water in the wintertime!
Kincardine, Ontario, celebrates Scottish heritage year-round but summertime is when the authentic Scottish lifestyle comes alive.
Each year the area hosts a massive Scottish Festival, with the 2025 fest already in the works and scheduled for July 2025.
“We pride ourselves in honouring the traditions and contributions of Scottish culture within the Canadian multicultural mosaic,” states the Kincardine Scottish Festival.
The festivities include traditional food, kilts galore, a bagpipe parade and a beloved tradition – the Highland Games.
Each year the festival brings in over 30 Scottish pipe bands from across Canada and the United States and Highland Games athletes from all over. Some of the games festival-goers can observe include weights, stone and hammer throws.
