From enchanting waterfalls to incredible hikes and deep canyons, Jasper National Park in Alberta is where adventure-seekers go to see and do some incredible things.
No matter the season, there are some impressive sights—but few are like Medicine Lake.
Located 20 km southeast of the townsite, this particular area is now open to visitors; however, what you see will depend on when you check it out.
While there is no shortage of beautiful lakes and rivers in the area, Medicine Lake is something else.
According to Travel Alberta, the area has made quite a name for itself.
“This 7-km-long (4.3 mi) lake is famous for its disappearing waters,” they explain.
“At the height of summer, Medicine Lake is a great place to swim, paddle and fish. You’d never know it had a hole in it. It’s ideal for families, but maybe not for those people with an enduring fear of going down the drain with the bathwater.”
So how does it work?
A pool in a league of its own. Medicine Lake sits atop a limestone cave system that drains its waters.
“As long as meltwater pours in from the Maligne Valley watershed, the lake pools up. But as the snowmelt slackens in fall, the lake begins to drain,” they write.
“The water flows through the underground caves and emerges 16 km (10 mi) downstream. Eventually, the lake isn’t much more than a mudflat until the following spring.”
Want to see it for yourself? Please be mindful while in the park.
While Jasper is now open to the public, there are many sites that are still in the process of rebuilding.

Enjoy and happy exploring!
