Jake Gyllenhaal and Amy Adams to create movie based on UBC prof’s life

Here’s a fun little bit of news for you to kick off the week. Recently, Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal announced that they will be partnering on a new project, and it’s about a UBC professor! What could a professor do to get the attention of two Hollywood A-listers? Read on and find out, folks!

Last week, Dr. Suzanne Simard, a professor in the Forestry department at UBC, released a new memoir titled Finding the Mother Tree: Discovering the Wisdom of the Forest. The book provides a full account of Simard’s groundbreaking work in forest ecology, which has changed our understanding of how trees and forests grow and live. Already a leader in her field, Simard has spoken at TED Talks, and her ideas were adapted into a major motion picture (if you’re guessing Avatar, you’re right).

And while old James Cameron may have taken a little artistic liberty, Simard’s work has proven to be invaluable for the study of forests. Beyond that, this new memoir offers a more human, narrative-based look at her research, offering insight into her discoveries.

Well, it just so happens that Amy Adams announced that she was starting her own production company last week. Called Bond Group Entertainment, it’s aimed at uplifting female creators and ‘encourage a more altruistic world’. Now, Finding the Mother Tree will actually be the first project from Bond Group Entertainment, and Adams is set to star.

However, that’s not the case for Nine Stories, the production company headed by Jake Gyllenhaal. Having already produced Tony-nominated live plays, we’re sure that Nine Stories will bring the technical expertise and production capacities needed for the project.

After all, this is Amy Adams we’re talking about here, we’re sure she could have partnered with just about anyone that she wanted to.
