This inner-city wetland in Calgary has a fish hatchery and stunning fall foliage
Calgary is a bit of a nature lover’s paradise. What other city in Canada boasts a 15-hectare wetland, right in the heart of downtown?
Pearce Estate Park lies along a gentle curve in the Bow River, a haven for birds, fish and other wildlife just a few kilometres from the city centre.
Willows, water birch and red-osier dogwood thrive in the area, creating an environment that attracts biodiversity from across the city to the river’s edge.
It’s a natural playground where you can meander through three ponds and a fish hatchery, all nestled within a peaceful forest.
What to expect
The 15-hectare wetland area at Pearce Estate Park is a combined 21-hectare area when including the provincially operated Bow Habitat Station, which is housed nearby.
The land was donated to the city by William Pearce, a prominent early Calgarian, surveyor, civil engineer and public servant.
He was dedicated to preserving especially scenic parkland in the Calgary area, anticipating its future growth and value within the city. He also set aside St. George’s and St. Patrick’s islands, along with the opposite north bank of the Bow River, as future parkland.
These wetlands have been transformed several times, beginning as a riverine forest, then later used for agriculture during Pearce’s ownership. Currently, the park is being “re-naturalized” to resemble its original condition.
Inner city paradise
It’s hard not to see what Pearce admired so much when walking through Pearce Estate Park. The numerous balsam poplar trees, which some locals call “Black Cottonwoods,” are decades old and have deep nooks in them where birds like tree swallows and northern flickers prefer to nest.
Along the Bow River, you’ll see ducks and other waterfowl, alongside pelicans and the occasional eagle circling the sky, depending on the time of year.
With spaces like these in Calgary, it’s easy to forest bathe and decompress, refinding your step in nature.
Now is an especially scenic time to visit, with the trees at the water’s edge turning brilliant gold.
We have William Pearce to thank for the expansive wetlands found within Calgary’s inner-city.
But the beauty of nature? That’s all her own.
