This Alberta hike will lead you to an enchanted meadow in the Rocky Mountains

Temperatures have begun to drop, but there’s still time to squeeze in a few more adventures before the snow starts to fall. One of the most enchanting hikes you can take in Alberta this fall? Johnston Canyon and the Ink Pots.

What to expect

With plenty to see, from waterfalls to towering trees, this popular hike is located approximately 30 minutes from the town of Banff.

While it’s best known for its narrow passageways through a deep canyon, those who are in it for the long haul will find themselves in a magical meadow where bubbles from deep below the Earth’s surface burst into shallow pools.

How to get there

Interested in seeing the 30-metre-high falls and following the well-maintained path to vibrant pockets of water?

From the iconic Rocky Mountain town, you can take the Route 9 Roam Bus to the trailhead.

According to Parks Canada, it’s about 5.7 km one way to the Ink Pots, with 330 metres of elevation gain.

Depending on how speedy you are (and how busy it is), it could take four hours from beginning to end, so bring snacks and wear comfortable shoes.

There’s a reason why this is among the most beloved hikes in Alberta.

You’re in for quite the sight.

Enjoy and happy hiking!
