There’s a horseshoe-shaped waterfall in Ontario & it’s similar to Niagara Falls

Ontario is full of waterfall adventures, especially along the Golden Horseshoe. That being said, staying on that theme, there is a stunning waterfall in the province that is actually shaped like a horseshoe and it’s similar to Niagara Falls. Here’s what to know about Indian Falls.

You’ll find this lovely gem within Indian Falls Conservation Area, which is almost a three-hour drive north of Toronto and about six hours if you’re coming from Ottawa.

According to Grey Sauble Conservation, in order to access the falls, you’ll need to embark on a 0.8km trail which is considered “very rigorous and is rated difficult” due to its rocky terrain, steep paths and cliffs.

Though the journey is tough, the end result is even better!

You’ll come face to face with the 15-metre-high waterfall. It was formed by the erosion of soft Queenston shale beneath hard Manitoulin dolomite, in a manner similar to Niagara Falls, according to Grey Sauble Conservation.

The falls were named after the Newash Indian tribe who lived in this area at one time, per Visit Grey.

It’s important to note that the flow of water is minimal in the late summer and early fall months. So now is the perfect time to explore the ground and embark on an adventure.

Access to the base of the falls is strictly prohibited so watch your step as you visit the falls. It does close periodically due to flooding on the trails, so check online before you head out.

According to Visit Grey, this experience is a self-guided tour that will take you to some lesser-known waterfalls – including Indian Falls.

“Where the water and rocks meet, feel the rush as the river flows over the escarpment’s edge,” reads the description of the tour by the Grey County tourism website.

The tour is about 150 km long, and it’s the perfect weekend activity. The tour will also take you to Eugenia Falls, Hoggs Falls, Holstein Dam, Indian Falls, Inglis Falls, Jones Falls, McGowan Falls, and Weaver’s Creek Falls.

So plan that weekend trip and chase waterfalls! Safely, of course.
