There’s an Igloo building experience in Ontario & you can stay in it overnight

Want to really embrace winters in Canada? This experience allows you to do just that, while also learning a little about history. This winter, you can book an “Intro to Igloo Building” experience in the Haliburton Forest, here in Ontario.

If you’ve never heard of it, the Haliburton Forest & Wild Life Reserve is an outdoor lover’s paradise year-round, but it is also a research facility and an education centre.

The sustainably managed forest offers winter experiences such as Ice Fishing, Ice climbing, and even Snowga (snowshoeing and yoga), all through Yours Outdoors.

And they also offer a full experience on building an igloo.

Intro to Igloo Building: How to Construct and Camp in an Igloo is available for several dates through December, and every month until March.

“The igloo, like the birch bark canoe, is a Canadian icon,” states the description.

“In its simplicity of form, in its efficient use of a renewable resource, in its method of construction, and above all, in its unequalled insulating properties, the igloo is a marvel of indigenous ingenuity which permitted the Inuit to survive and thrive in the most inhospitable and challenging environment humans have ever inhabited in a shelter that is safe, lasting, comfortable, and which, to this day, puts other snow shelters and modern 4-season tents to shame.”

With many campers today not being familiar with igloos, this experience will cover several topics including: the differences between igloos, quinzhees, snow caves, and other other snow shelters; The benefits and advantages of igloos over modern winter camping shelters; The varieties of snow conditions suitable for building igloos using traditional and modern techniques; Hands-on practice in the building of an igloo; as well as gow to heat your igloo safely to stay warm and dry out any wet gear while right inside the igloo.

There is an opportunity to stay overnight, and while it is at no cost, to have a safe experience there is an instructor available for consultation and that costs $60.

Are you ready to check it out?
