Dive into summer: Vancouver lifeguards can make up to $30 an hour

Need a reliable job this summer? Vancouver lifeguards earn great money while keeping people safe. And what better way to spend a gorgeous summer day than outside at the beach, instead of cooped up in an office? If your interest is piqued, the process of becoming a certified lifeguard is pretty straightforward – so read on!

“Lifeguard and swim instructor recruitment is a top priority for the Park Board,” explains Steve Kellock, Director of Recreation Services for the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation. “The certification process not only teaches the skills needed to save a life and the leadership skills associated with teaching lessons, but being a lifeguard is a valuable addition to any resume.”

As well, Kellock explains that becoming a lifeguard can open many doors. A Lifeguard role can be a stepping stone for a career as a paramedic or firefighter, or even a teaching role.

Certification & courses

Now, let’s get into the certification process. Applicants must be at least 16 years old and complete a series of five courses, which total 135 hours:

• Bronze Medallion: Steps to becoming a lifeguard showing courses labeled prerequisite, optional, and required courses ($182.70)
• Bronze Cross ($126)
• Standard First Aid / CPR
• National Lifeguard – Pool Course ($350)
• National Lifeguard – Waterfront Training ($135)

According to the release, the Park Board offers courses year-round to accommodate any schedule or pace. Vancouver’s Leisure Access Program (LAP) provides candidates with up to 70% off of course fees.

For non-LAP candidates, any money spent on the courses above is made back within the first 20 paid hours, 12 of which are included in orientation and onboarding.

Pay and work hours

Indoor lifeguard positions start at $25.21 to $29.63 per hour, while outdoor roles start at $30.81 per hour. Both receive an additional 12% in lieu of benefits.

Work schedules can accommodate students with changing class schedules, seasonal workers, as well as those looking for another source of income part-time.

The Vancouver Park Board reviews applications on an ongoing basis. And if you’re interested in moving forward, the next in-person screenings will occur on April 28th, May 26th, and June 9th for both indoor and outdoor lifeguard roles.
