High-tech job growth has really taken off in a number of Canadian cities over the past couple of years, but it’s Vancouver and Toronto that currently dominate the scene. And not just in Canada.

According to a new Tech-30 report by CBRE, Vancouver recorded 28,300 new high-tech jobs in 2020 and 2021, which translates to a 44% increase in the job pool. Likewise, Toronto followed closely with a 37% increase, and 47,800 new high-tech jobs to show for it.

This makes Vancouver the city that saw the most high-tech job growth in all of North America, outpacing tech giants like Austin, Seattle, and even Silicon Valley.

For those who don’t know, “high-tech” refers to the newest technology on the market. The industry is primarily made up of businesses that sell electronic-based goods & services, software, computers, AI, and other products related to information technology.

This effectively means that high-tech jobs can exist in many different sectors – since many companies rely on web developers, software engineers, computer systems analysts (and many more) to support what they do.

According to the report, much of the high-tech job growth in North America can be attributed to larger tech companies benefiting from pandemic-related business growth. And because tech jobs typically offer more flexible work models, they’ve been able to embrace the evolving trends between job creation and office demand.

“High-tech employment, which declined minimally in the early months of the pandemic, has grown steadily since May 2020 to surpass pre-pandemic highs.”

Well, that’s all for now, Vancouver. Here are some open positions in tech if you’re on the hunt for a new job.
