It’s been a long time coming but the U.S. border is finally open to Canadian travellers! However, though we’d love to tell you that it’s as easy as queuing up your road trip playlist, hitting the gas will be a little more complicated than car snacks and seating arrangements. COVID is still very much a concern, so – here’s what you need to know before crossing over to the other side.

Whether you’re headed to Montana or Idaho for a change of scenery it’s important to come prepared.

On your way out of Canada, travellers will be asked to show proof that they have been fully vaccinated with any of the Health Canada-approved vaccines at least 14 days prior. According to the CDC, travellers “who enter the United States at land POEs and ferry terminals do not require proof of a negative test”.

The proof of vaccination also does not apply to those who are under the age of 18. That’s easy enough, right?

Well, getting back is a different story.

Anyone crossing into Canada from the U.S. will need a little more than their fancy new QR code and passport.

In addition to their government-issued ID, vacationers over the age of 5 years old will need to present a negative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test, which must be taken within 72 hours of your arrival with results uploaded on the ArriveCAN app.

Plan on staying for a good time, but not a long time? You can also take a pre-arrival molecular test before leaving home as long as it, again, abides by the 3-day window.

Here are just a few places where you can take your test in Calgary:

CVM MEDICAL

Results are available within 36 hours of the test.

Where: Suite 252, 575 Palmer Road NE Calgary
Cost: $165+

SHOPPERS DRUG MART
