Like all of you, we grew up thinking that a million dollars was the most money a human being could have – after all it was good enough for Doctor Evil, right? To our surprise, as we grew up and realized that money doesn’t grow on trees, we also realized that we had it all wrong. In Wild Rose Country, the castle-like Scrooge McDuck-style home that we imagined every well-off oil tycoon had is still kind of out of the question for a million dollars… unless you’re willing to live on the outskirts of the bigger cities. Here’s what kind of homes and properties $1 million can actually get you all around Alberta.
Looking for a home that’ll beam you up, Scotty? 54213 Range Road 290 is perhaps, the most unconventional use of your money (as far as this particular list goes), but hey, maybe you’re in the market for something more unique. With 4 bedrooms, 3 and a half bedrooms, solar panels and 22 ft high vaulted ceilings that come to a head around a large centre tree-post, this one-of-a-kind find is truly … well, one-of-a-kind. Good luck finding anything with as much character as this one.

Own a piece of Alberta’s rich history, by throwing a cool mill on Lacombe’s locally iconic flat iron building! According to the listing, this landmark has been recently restored and is in pristine condition, despite being over 100 years old. Now, we’re definitely not in the market to purchase anything nearly as pricy, but we think that this is definitely worth the cool mill that it’s listed for. Obviously, it’s currently set up as a commercial building, but a small reno or two could make this into a pretty impressive live/work property in no time.
Where: 5005 50 Avenue, Lacombe, Alberta
Now, this is something that you probably won’t find in BC or Ontario, but you can still find very impressive homes sitting right at the million-dollar mark in Calgary. This half-acre corner lot that almost backs onto the beautiful Lynx Ridge Golf Course in northwest Calgary features 3,400 square feet of living space. It’s a good size, in a pretty nice location, and tough to beat for a million bucks.

With 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms, this stunning farmhouse can only be described as cinematic. As you can see – this place literally looks like something straight out of an old movie, TV show or book. Framed by tall grass and rolling hills, this big house on the prairie, is unmistakably Albertan in all the best ways.

Pffttt…. and they say Alberta doesn’t have any beaches. Here’s your proof, naysayers! With 4 bedrooms, three bathrooms and tennis, beach volleyball and a basketball court as well as access to Alberta’s gorgeous Pigeon Lake, this 1500 sqft beach house screams ‘best summer ever,’ and we’d like to take the opportunity to request that whoever buys this place send us a formal invitation. Looks like fun!
Where: 72 Beach Avenue, NE, Thorsby, Alberta
Canmore is one of Alberta’s most prestigious areas and there’s no doubt why. Nestled in the Rocky Mountains surrounded by lakes, waterfalls and wildlife, this mountain town is a dream location, and now – for just under a million dollars, you too can have a slice of that paradise pie. With 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms this newly-built condo might lack size and space, but man, oh man does it score big in the benefits department.
Where: 101, 810 7th Street, Canmore Alberta
Located only minutes away from Sherwood Park, this massive Alberta home sits on nearly 4 acres of land, has an outdoor pool, a hot tub, a gorgeous patio, a wood-burning fireplace and a custom closet and ensuite just off the master bedroom. You know…. rich people things.

Last but certainly not least, we’ve got a large Rural Strathcona County home just east of Edmonton. You’re going to be hard-pressed to find something with this much square footage AND this large of a lot for under a million in Calgary or Edmonton, but if you’re down to be a little outside the city then a place like this might belong high on your list.
Where:#612 52304 RR 233, Rural Strathcona County
Okay, so this one is more – a home AWAY from home, but we thought we’d include it because it’s pretty cool. Located in the town of Oyen, Alberta (don’t worry we had never heard of it either), Overtime comes complete with everything that you’ll need to successfully run the business, including a pizza oven, committed patrons and 6805 sqft of space where customers can eat, play games or watch the playoffs.
