Here’s the story behind the popular new pedestrian bridge that just opened in Liberty Village

A brand new pedestrian/cycle bridge has just opened in Liberty Village and people are crazy happy about it. Who would have thought such a simple-seeming piece of architecture could bring so much joy? Well, in times like these, where going for a walk or a bike ride is pretty much our only choice when it comes to outdoor entertainment, the excitement is less of a surprise than one might think. We’re talking about the gorgeous new King-Liberty Pedestrian/Cycle Bridge.

From plans to production – Here’s the story behind it.

So as you probably guessed from its name, this new bridge is right smack in the middle of the popular Liberty Village. This Toronto neighbourhood is known for its industrial architecture, its many shops and restaurants, and its perfect mix of commercial and residential space. As one of the hottest spots to live in the city right now, it’s no wonder a development here has people talking!

The plans for the King-Liberty Pedestrian/Cycle Bridge were first cooked up back in 2011. This bridge is 10-years in the making, y’all! At least that’s when the city council first endorsed the location and general design. For a little archival blast from the past, you can read the actual agenda item from December 2011 right here.

Of course, it wasn’t until 2018 that the bridge we see today became a part of the City-Approved Capital Works Program. It was then that the King-Liberty Pedestrian/Cycle Bridge design was developed into the gorgeous structure we see today.

So what did those plans include? Let us break it down for ya! The bridge design features amazing perks like a five-metre wide covered and mostly enclosed deck that spans the entire 55-metre wide Metrolinx rail corridor. It is accessible by staircase (with a bicycle channel) or by elevator.

The entire thing is illuminated at all times for safe and convenient 24-hour access. Speaking of safety, they’ve also got closed-circuit cameras and emergency call buttons. Plus, to spruce things up there’s some insane public art on display along the way! Not too shabby, eh?

When construction began on this crazy structure it was no laughing matter. The project required the removal of 26 trees from the area boulevard. But don’t worry, environmentalists! Those trees were more than replaced with 84 new trees and shrubs provided by the Urban Forestry.

After all that planning, the steel bridge structure was hoisted overnight on September 15, 2019 and the rest of the project was developed into what stands today.

Today the project is complete and the King-Liberty Pedestrian/Cycle Bridge stands tall. It serves as an awesome way to cross over the Metrolinx Rail Corridor. Plus, it’s pretty darn neat to look at.

We’ve got to say, the aesthetics of the structure fit in perfectly with the neighbourhood. Plus, you’ll never hear us complaining about added functionality!
