If you’re anything like us, you spend most of your day staring at a screen. So why not change things up and spend an evening at the theatre staring at real people instead?
Hadestown is the winner of eight 2019 Tony® Awards and the latest production to come to Calgary courtesy of Broadway Across Canada. It’s a haunting retelling of two classical tales set to award-winning music and delivered with devastating vocals.
We were also lucky enough to see it on opening night!
The musical is only in Calgary until Sunday, November 26th – and there’s still time to get tickets. Here are all the show highlights and why you should absolutely – run, not walk – to book your seat.
The musical production of Hadestown interweaves two ancient tales from Greek legend. The relationship between Hades, ruler of the underworld, and his wife Persephone, the goddess of spring, along with Orpheus, a gifted bard and his love Eurydice.
This retelling takes you to a New Orleans-inspired setting, complete with epic rhythm and inherent poetry. Follow the love story of Orpheus and Eurydice as they navigate a world of gods and journey to the underworld to meet the king himself.
Not only is Hadestown a musical thrall, but it’s also a performance that will make you forget to blink! There’s just so much to look at, from the moving set design to the lights and fog effects to the on-stage musicians who manage to fit seamlessly into the setting while also bringing it to life.
But of course, it’s the vocals that will leave you speechless. There’s ethereal harmonies, soulful solos, and musical numbers that will have you tapping your feet the whole way through.
That’s probably the most special part of theatre. It engages every sense for an experience that could never be matched by the movies… is it obvious we loved it?
If you’re looking for a visually stunning, musical night out – you don’t want to miss Hadestown. Get your tickets to see it this week, the last show will be at 7:30 PM on Sunday, November 26th!
