Alberta has officially made money-saving changes to their GDL program & here’s what to know

Procrastinators rejoice because as of this weekend, advanced road tests will no longer be necessary to get a full Class 5 or Class 6 driver’s licence in Alberta!

According to the province, nearly 65% of drivers in the last 5 years have not bothered getting their GDL in Alberta, most likely because their wallet would take a hit.

“Many Albertans have told us that the advanced test costs too much, is a roadblock to finding jobs and has created unnecessary red tape,” said Prasad Panda, Minister of Transportation.

“That’s why we are eliminating the advanced road test for (Class 5) passenger vehicles and (Class 6) motorcycles as well as the additional Class 4 road test while maintaining strong safety standards for drivers.”

Now, however, they can graduate without having to pay the $154 simply by meeting the following requirements:

  • Being 18 years old
  • Having completed your 24-month probationary period
  • If you have taken a Class 5 or 6 driver training program from a driver training school licensed by Transportation and Economic Corridors, you may be eligible to reduce the 24-month probation period by up to six months
  • Having no suspensions or demerits for the last 12 months

If, however, you’re in need of a GDL urgently in Alberta (for a job or another valid reason), drivers can also visit a registry, where they may be deemed eligible for a fast-track GDL license.

For more information, you can do so on the Government of Alberta’s website. Happy graduating, friends!

This could be huge for some people!
