This Ontario park nestled along the Canadian Shield has a tranquil winter forest

Frontenac Provincial Park is the snowy getaway you’ve been dreaming of. The Ontario park is one of the handful that are open year-round, and thank goodness this winter wonderland is!

Nestled along the Canadian Shield north of Kingston, Ontario, outdoors lovers can explore over 100 km of hiking trails and even rent snowshoes to trek through a tranquil winter forest.

Getting to Frontenac Provincial Park

The drive from Toronto/the GTA will take around three hours – a perfect distance for a day trip away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

The park is tucked along the Canadian Sheid in Sydenham, Ontario and if you’re visiting Frontenac for the day, you’ll need to pay a day-use fee.

Fees start at $12.25 per vehicle.

Most of the journey to the park will take you along Lake Ontario, a scenic route to an even more scenic destination!

Exploring Frontenac Provincial Park

According to Ontario Parks, nature lovers come from all over the globe to explore Frontenac.

While there are over 100 km of trails to pick from, in the winter months the Doe Lake Loop and Arab Lake Gorge Loop are two of the most popular.

The Doe Lake Loop is stunning when it snows as it winds along the shores of South Otter Lake and Doe Lake leading to a lookout over Doe Lake. The loop will take the average hiker around an hour and a half to complete.

The Arab Lake Gorge Loop is a little shorter at 1.5 km, which will take hikers about 30 minutes from start to end. Part of the adventure will bring you along a scenic boardwalk, perfect for a cute photo.

Up for some cross-country skiing? Big Salmon Lake Road ski trail is part of what the park calls “backcountry skiing.”

Yep, this hidden slice of heaven is in “natural solitude” taking you gliding through a silent winter forest. Sounds pretty perfect, right?

If you need snowshoes to explore, snowshoes and poles are available to rent at the park office with sizes for everyone from kids to adults. Call the park ahead of time if you need rentals for a larger group.

Walkin’ in a winter wonderland just got a whole new meaning.
