This BC town just introduced a four-day work week program & here’s what we know

The coveted four-day workweek model has really taken off in terms of what many prospective employees are looking for. And if you’re getting fed up with these high costs of living in and around Vancouver – we might have a potential solution.

Merritt, BC is introducing a four-day work week pilot program for all City employees. So, if you’re willing to relocate, you might just want to check out their open positions. But for now – let’s dive into the program.

On Tuesday, September 20, 2022, City of Merritt staff submitted a report regarding a one-year trial of an “extended hour and 4-day compressed work week.” According to the city’s website, extensive research by Staff led to the Council’s approval, though no start date has been set yet.

Benefits for City of Merritt & Staff

“Research indicates that the compressed work week will not only add to the City’s ability to retain and attract staff, but also increase morale and performance. Studies also indicate that extended open service hours for the community would be an undeniable benefit for those residents who work Monday to Friday.”

The proposed hours for City Hall to be open are Tuesday to Friday from 8 am to 5:45 pm, whereas the current hours are from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. Both options include 35 hours of service to the public.

Benefits for Residents

In addition to increased accessibility to City services for the working public, the pilot is expected to reduce turnover and vacancy rates (and associated costs), as well as promote workplace wellness in a sector that is not able to ‘go remote’ or offer other competitive work benefits.

Seems like a win-win for the City Staff and its residents, if you ask us. But we’ll have to wait for the pilot to be implemented to see.
