A spectacular holiday fest with thousands of candles is coming to Ontario

Something beautiful is coming our way. The award-winning First Light at Sainte-Marie Among the Hurons is what the magic of the holidays is all about.

Described as “everyone’s favourite candlelit holiday event,” First Light is an enchanting festival illuminated by thousands of glowing candles.

The cozy ambiance will be accompanied by a great lineup of family activities and live musical performances.

The musical acts include choirs, folk music, harp, and hand drumming.

Do a little holiday shopping as you explore the fair with 45 vendors selling incredible artisan items — don’t forget to bring cash!

You’ll also get to enjoy take-home crafts and witness fascinating historical demonstrations.

That includes blacksmithing demos, Indigenous legends and stories in the longhouse, quill pen writing workshops, and a festive photo booth.

The historical buildings will be completely illuminated by candlelight and you can explore them all.

Pathways wind throughout the property and they are adorned in beautiful seasonal greenery.

Once you’ve wandered your way through the festival, you can warm up with a hot cup of cocoa by the fire.

There’s also fresh-made popcorn, comfort food like poutine and burgers, handheld tourtières, and free cookies at the cookhouse.

“There’s a reason this event is an annual tradition for many,” the website says.

No advance reservations are required, just show up and purchase a walk-in ticket.

If you’ve never been to Sainte-Marie Among the Hurons, it’s a history museum that was once the settlement of Ontario’s first European community.

The French Jesuit settlement was founded way, way back in the 1630s.

It’s a time machine back to the 17th century and it’s one of Canada’s National Historical Sites, with fascinating artifacts, demos, and educational programming.

You’ll be getting a big dose of holiday cheer with a side of history at this festival, and trust us when we say it’s not one you want to miss.
