This map shows when the leaves will change colour in Ontario this fall

It’s almost time to welcome the new season, and you may have noticed that the leaves have already gotten a head start. If you’re wondering when and where to see fall colours in Ontario this year, we’ve got the answers for you right here.

In an annual fall colour report by Discover Muskoka, the fall colours in our province will likely begin in earnest around September 24th.

From September 24th to 30th, locals will have the opportunity to see some early autumn colours, the report estimates.

The peak viewing times for maple trees, which are the trees known for their golden, orange, and red hues, will take place from October 1st to 12th.

The “golden encore” will take place from roughly October 13th to the 21st.

That’s when poplar and birch trees, which are the last to turn colour, begin to “go up in a blaze of golden yellow,” says Discover Muskoka.

A map provided by Ontario Parks shows up-to-date information about the autumn leaves in every provincial park.

The map is based on the fall colour report at every park, which is updated regularly throughout the season to let visitors know what they can expect to see.

The legend on the right-hand side even has icons depicting which stage the colours are at every park.

“The colour of the leaf icon is representative of each specific park and its fall colour report,” says Ontario Parks.

“The colour of each region is determined by averaging all parks within that region.”

Right now, a handful of parks are 20% to 30% into their seasonal colour change.

However, most of the provincial parks still have green trees and are only 10% of the way.

Whether you’re getting a head start on your seeing fall colours in Ontario or simply want to know the status of your local park, you can find the map online right here.

Enjoy the view!
