Facebook has created a VR office for when you work from home

It’s the early 2010’s, you’re tired and don’t want to go to work. So you hop on your Wii and send your Mii in instead. It’s just a fever dream until it’s not because it looks like this is about to become a reality for many people working from home. The world’s largest social network just launched a test of a new virtual-reality remote work app where users can hold meetings as avatar versions of themselves.

The app is Facebook Horizon Workrooms and it’s available to users through the company’s Oculus Quest 2 headsets. This new remote work app is a step toward Mark Zuckerberg’s futuristic “metaverse”. Basically, a more interactive and embodied internet. Either way, the app kinda has an ominous vibe to it and is missing good old Mii gibberish. But hey, maybe it’ll turn out better than we expect.

Aesthetics aside (and ignoring the Matrix-like undertones), users of Workrooms can gather up to 16 people in VR and up to 50 people total including video conference attendees. Additionally, users can customize their characters, check out virtual reality conference rooms, collaborate on whiteboards and documents, all while using their own desk and computer keyboard at home and in the “office”.

Now, why the heck are they doing this? Well, Facebook thinks that AR and VR are the next big thing and they’re probably right. Not to mention, we are still in the middle of a pandemic and with global cases rising once again, WFH is definitely here to stay. But Facebook employees might not be able to hide behind the screen for much longer because Facebook’s Horizon Workrooms might just prove to be too fun. Hey, as long as there’s virtual ping-pong!

Of course, if you end up using Facebook Horizon Workrooms please be sure to give us a little review. You can learn more by clicking here.
