New ranking shows 4 Canadian universities are among the best in the world

Hats off to us! Universities in three Canadian provinces have landed on the prestigious ShanghaiRanking’s top 100 ranking of the world’s best universities for 2021. This ranking claims to be the most trustworthy source of global university rankings for its transparent and objective approach, so you know it’s legit. All but one of them managed to climb up from the previous year’s report.

After surveying over 2,000 universities, the ranking selected 100 institutions from all over the world for this ranking. Schools in the U.K. and U.S. dominated the top 10 spots, but not too far behind is the University of Toronto, which climbed up to 22nd place, up from 23rd place in 2020.

The University of British Columbia landed in 42nd place, a few points lower than the previous year when it placed 38th. Montreal’s McGill University improved its score significantly this year, rising up to 67th place from 78th place.

Ontario’s McMaster University managed to squeeze itself onto the top 100 ranking as well, landing in 92nd place. In 2020, the school came in 98th place.

This is far from the only global ranking of post-secondary schools where Canadian universities have made the cut. According to a 2021 report by Times Higher Education, Queen’s University actually placed higher than U of T, landing in 5th place. Six other schools received a nod in this ranking too, including the University of Calgary and Simon Fraser University.

U of T prides itself on being the highest-ranked Canadian university, placing higher than most other schools in the country in several international reports. It’s also known as Canada’s leading school for “sugar babies,” according to an annual report by Seeking Arrangements. Somehow, we aren’t surprised that the school isn’t as quick to brag about this achievement on their website.
