Annually on Nov. 16, Métis people across Canada pay tribute to the Right Honourable Louis Riel by marking the date of his execution.
Louis Riel was a Métis leader, founder of Manitoba, and a central figure in the Red River and North-West resistance. In 1885, he was executed for high treason due to his resistance to Canadian encroachment on Métis lands.
In Alberta, Nov. 16 is commemorated as Louis Riel Day, and the week surrounding it is known as Métis Week. This important time celebrates the culture, history and contributions of the Métis people. It’s a moment for reflection, remembrance, education and celebration of Métis identity and resilience.
There’s plenty happening in and around Calgary to mark the week. Take a look at what’s going on in our city and beyond.
