Who’s ready for a truly breathtaking fall hike in British Columbia? The popular backcountry trail to Elfin Lakes at Garibaldi Provincial Park is definitely one for the books if you love an alpine adventure.
Meandering through old-growth forest, sub-alpine meadows, and past a small waterfall, the hike is on the long side (11 kilometres each way) but not too strenuous, according to Tourism Squamish – and the breathtaking vistas you’ll encounter are well worth the trek.
The trail begins at the Diamond Head parking lot on a wide, gravel road, winding its way up to the scenic Read Heather Meadows.
Here, you’ll find a day-use shelter with a wood stove that makes for an excellent rest stop before continuing your journey to the second part of the hike, leading onto Paul Ridge and the sub-alpine.
The two Elfin Lakes are visible from a ways off and the mountains and glaciers beyond provide an achingly beautiful backdrop to the area. The first and larger lake is fine for swimming and on a hot summer day, there’s nothing better than jumping in to cool off. The second lake is for drinking water and swimming is forbidden.
After climbing in elevation, the trail gradually winds its way down toward the two Elfin Lakes. Both lakes are revered for their crystal-clear waters, though swimming is only permitted at the first lake.
The Squamish Trails Society ranks the hike as “moderate,” with opportunities for overnight camping as well as shorter day hikes.
The park campground operates year-round (reservations required), and has over a dozen wooden camping pads overlooking the valley.
Those looking for a cozy fall cabin experience can check out the Eflin Lakes Cabin just beyond, which can sleep up to 33 people in single and double bunks.
As the shelter is user-maintained and there are no garbage facilities, make sure to pack out what you pack in. Overnight visitors have access to cooking utensils, a stove (propane supplied by BC Parks), two wash sinks, solar-powered lights, and pit toilet facilities.
So there you have it, fall hikers! It’s a glorious time of year to be out and about in British Columbia.
Enjoy the autumn colours!
How to get there: Drive one hour and a half from Vancouver via BC-99 N to Garibaldi Provincial Park. Turn east onto Mamquam Road at the Canadian Tire Store, which has signs for the Diamond Head parking lot.
