Want to work in the Alberta film industry? Here’s how to get a job on set

Ever wonder what it would be like to get a job in the Alberta film industry? From major productions to low-budget experiments, Wild Rose Country has been at the forefront of some incredible projects, so it’s no surprise that you’d want to be a part of the magic!

Whether you dream of something bigger and want to get your foot in the door, or are just looking to pay your rent and rub elbows, Hollywood North is a great place to start—but where do you begin?

As it turns out, passing ‘go’ is a lot easier than you might think, it all starts with a little tenacity, some time, and an interest in what’s new and coming soon.

Brock Skretting, Head of Advocacy at Keep Alberta Rolling, broke it down for me and has some incredible advice for those just getting started.

How to get a job in the Alberta Film Industry

In front of the camera

“It depends on really what area you’re interested in and what are your strengths,” he told Curiocity,

“If you’re just curious about the industry and maybe interested in acting but don’t have a lot of experience or training, then being an extra is an excellent way to kind of get your foot in the door and get on set and see what it’s all about.”

The trick? Knowing where to look for opportunities.

“There are a few different strategies,” he told us.

“Different productions will have open casting calls and sometimes we’ll put those on our [Keep Alberta Rolling’s] page.”

If, however, you want to take it a step further, you can also find the contact information for local casting directors on the Actors Union of Alberta website or take a workshop.

Behind the Camera

Is your passion in the wardrobe department or in the editors’ room?

There are a ton of jobs available to those who want to stay out of the spotlight.

“It’s not just directing or camera work, there are also crew jobs,” he explained.

“Production assistant is one really great way to get your foot in the door and there are classes with the Directors Guild of Canada – Alberta District Council.”

According to Skretting, the DGC is a labour organization that represents everything from locations departments, production offices, accounting, editing, production managers, directors, and assistant directors, making it a great place to kick off your journey.

Are you an artist?

Whether you’re a makeup geek or love to get your hands dirty, The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE 212) is the place to be.

Representing over 1,500 artists, costume designers, special effects artists, and craftsmen, they’ve assisted in some incredible projects and have offered some amazing courses and workshops.

Additionally, film festivals are also a great way to meet people in the industry.

Whether it be the Calgary International Film Festival or the Edmonton International Film Festival, there are several talented people who attend and are willing to mix and mingle with enthusiastic cinephiles.

Ready to give it a go?

Really, it comes down to your love for the industry.

There’s a place for everyone, whether you have experience or are just getting started.

Keep in mind that things are slower in the winter months and pick up in the summer. It might take time, but if you really work at it, there’s no telling what you’ll accomplish…. or who you’ll meet.

“Recently Netflix has done some productions in Alberta and indicated interest in growing in Alberta. The Abandons was a big one with Lena Headey and Gillian Anderson, and the other one is My Life With the Walter Boys.”

“There’s also the JonBenét mini-series coming with Paramount+, you know, Netflix and Paramount+ are big streamers that are looking to bring more projects into Alberta, then of course there’s Heartland and everyone knows The Last of Us shot here.”

Alberta truly shows no sign of slowing, so it’s the perfect time to jump into it.

Good luck, have fun, and enjoy the ride.

We can’t wait to see your name in the credits!
