Calgary is no place for a boring winter, pals. And, we’re not just talking about escaping to the mountains for a quick getaway. We can get the most out of our winter right here in our very own city in the beloved East Village. From cross country skiing, to curling on St. Patrick’s Island, to warming up by the fire, EV has everything you need for a perfect day of winter adventures.

So, here’s the scoop on what’s going on at East Village this winter!

calgary east village nordic loop

First up, East Village has debuted a brand new Nordic Loop for cross-country skiers (and show-shoers). The 1-km loop is unlike anything downtown Calgary has had before, making it as easy and accessible as ever to partake in all the winter fun. The Nordic Loop is BYOS (Bring Your Own Skis), but there is a waxing station on site. And if you’re looking to get even more active, make sure to head over to Patrick’s Island for a quick curling match!

Next, for those looking for a stunning backdrop for your next IG, East Village is your spot. Obviously, situated along the Bow River and nestled next to downtown coupled with all of the gorgeous local art makes for a pretty stunning spot in itself. But, if you want to take your EV views and knowledge to the next level, you need to check out East Village’s DE(TOURS).

Get lost in your own city and embark on a journey off the beaten path with DE(TOUR) guides for art lovers, historians, and even the avid Instagrammer! We can guarantee you’ll have at least a few photo ops along the way.

Or join Many Chief Tours for an authentic Indigenous walking tour of St. Patrick’s Island that provides guests with the opportunity to learn about local Indigenous history through cultural sharing with a local Indigenous guide. Learn more here.

And the perfect winter day in East Village doesn’t end there.

Obviously, with all of this wintery fun, you’re going to need some fuel in your system. Well, what better place to be than East Village, with tasty new spots opening up on the regular.

Why not try EV’s newest addition to the food scene, Alley Burger, for ooey-gooey cheeseburgers and poutine. If you’re up for something more breakfast-centric, you can never go wrong with Chix Egg Shop and Sidewalk Citizen. If pizza’s calling your name, Connie & John’s and Fresh Slice are a couple of delicious options. And finally, if you’re in the mood for something sweet, Mari Bakeshop has decadent baked goods to satisfy any sweet tooth.

But that’s enough food (for now). Let’s get to the grand reveal!

calgary east village hygge hut

Opening Today, February 5th, the Hygge Hut is like “a big warm East Village hug”. The Scandinavian-style hut is cozy as heck and enhanced by the glow of the fireplace. It’s also home to an interactive Winter Wonderland-themed photo wall for even more photo ops this season.

And last but not least, East Village knows that a day spent outside during a Calgary winter means that having ways to stay warm and cozy is a top priority. So, because they have our backs, along with the Hygge Hut to cozy up in, East Village has placed fire pits along the RiverWalk. Also opening on February 5th, these fire pits are the perfect place to enjoy the view and warm up the fingers.

So get out there and enjoy this winter weather while it lasts, Calgary!
